International Day of People with Disability
3 December – International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is a United Nations sanctioned day that aims to promote an understanding of people with disability and encourage support for their dignity, rights and well-being. On 14 October, 1992,the UN General Assembly proclaimed 3 December as the International Day of Disabled Persons. This day was first observed on 3 December 1992. It has been celebrated with varying degrees of success around the planet. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. It was originally called "International Day of Disabled Persons".Each year the day focuses on a different issue.
For me, it was extremely empowering and uplifting to take part in this event, to realize that a wide range of activities are arranged to assure people with disabilities are treated by society as an integral part. It’s just amazing to see the strength, dedication, and enthusiasm of this integral part of the society. It’s hard to describe the pride that fills me when I see people who reach their goals despite of physical limitations, a case when a young person with Down syndrome graduate from a prestigious university, which thousands, if not millions, of people dream of. It’s not an easy task but it’s a challenge to show the world that disability is not the barrier in achieving your or one’s goals. We all just have to be confident in that people’s abilities are not ‘disabled’, they just have different abilities.
